Porn, and people’s consumption of it, is a taboo topic, but we feel it’s a suitable subject for this week’s MakeUseOf Poll.

Don’t worry, as this article is perfectly Safe For Work, unless you consider a picture of two ladybirds enjoying coitus to be obscene. Which it isn’t, obviously. If you do consider it to be so then you should skip to another article immediately, because this may not be your cup of tea.

You’re All Addicts (Probably)

To answer this week’s question please scroll down the page until you see the Poll staring back at you. But first, we need to look at the results from last week, when we asked, “How Much Time Do You Spend Online Every Week?

Out of a total of 176 votes, 42.1% chose All day, every day, or so it feels (35 hours or more), 29% chose Too much, I admit (21-35 hours), 17.6% chose Probably 2-3 hours a day (14-21 hours), 5.7% chose At least one hour a day (7-14 hours), 3.4% chose I’m careful not to overdo it (4-7 hours), 1.7% chose Barely enough to even register (0-2 hours), and 0.6% chose Only very occasionally (2-4 hours).

Interestingly, these results almost lined up perfectly, with the longest time getting the most number of votes, and the second shortest time getting the least number of votes. This suggests that most of you use the Internet for several hours every day, both during the week and at weekends. And we actually should have offered higher weekly totals to get a truer reflection of your Internet usage. You Internet addicts, you.

Comment Of The Week

We received a lot of great comments, including those from Rick Sluder, Andrew K, and Mary Brady. Comment Of The Week goes to suzybel58, who earns our admiration and affection for this comment:

Retired, 60’s and once I get my necessities done or not, I go from my computer, to my iPad, to my Android phone and just keep at it. I switch to the telly at night though. If I’m having trouble sleeping at night I drag out my Blackberry tablet in bed or my Kobo and read. Too many gadgets and too much time on the internet you say? Don’t blame me, it’s my son’s fault, he got me hooked.

We chose this comment for several reasons. First, it shows how the Internet has seeped into everybody’s lives, including the older generations who have had to adapt to a changing world. Second, it shows how we flit from device to device, all of which access the Internet. And third, it shows how there is always someone else to blame. Naturally.

The Seedy Side Of The Internet

Pornography has been a mainstay of the Web pretty much since its inception. Even through the dark days of dial-up, when you had to wait for a picture to load, porn was popular. And these days it’s probably more popular than ever, and more easily accessible than ever before.

We want to know your attitudes to online porn in general, starting with the simple question of how often you look at it. Beyond that, are you perfectly OK with the amount of porn available online? Do you think porn is having a harmful effect on society Pornography Addiction: The Hidden Struggle & How to Break Free [Feature] Anon22 discovered Internet porn when he was just 12 years old. For around 10 years, Anon22 has enjoyed pornography using his computer once or twice a day, a compulsion that he claims ruined his social… Read More ? Are you worried about children being exposed to pornography at too young an age?

Please vote in the Poll above, and then explain in the comments section below why you voted that way, and how you view online porn in general.

The more information you can provide with your comment, the more accurate our conclusions can be based on the results. In other words, voting in the Poll tells us something, but adding detail in the comments section below tells us a whole lot more.

The best Comment Of The Week will win our everlasting admiration and affection. At least until we meet back here again this time next week.
